Step by Step

7 Jul

Anytime I hear those three words, I find my brain adding “day by day, a fresh start over…” Any one else remember this theme song? Just me?

Anyway, this weekend we got one of the bigger headaches  (so far) of the porch project done- the new steps! Well, not all of the steps done, but some important ones. Before I get to that, I just want to say a big thanks to Dan, my sister, and my parents for helping us out this weekend. We definitely wouldn’t have gotten as far without you… or maybe we just wouldn’t have gotten so far and remained married 🙂 All joking aside, we truly appreciate your help!

OK, back to business. The first item on our list for the weekend was finishing laying the cedar on the main deck.We also planned to build the stairs to the new platform and lay the deck boards on the platform. While we were finalizing the stair plans we realized we needed to nail down our lattice plans as well. So we spent the better part of Saturday morning brainstorming, measuring, and getting the details figured out. And then we headed to Menard’s for the second time this weekend (and the 4th time to the lumber yard) to get the lattice and PVC trim.

When we last checked in, it looked like this.

And after a 4-day weekend, we were able to get a few more things crossed off the list. I won’t bore you with all the details – let’s just say we spent a lot of time building and re-building the stairs. Here’s how she looks today.

Just needs the front step…

I can almost visualize the finished project now… almost! We plan to use the white trim all the way around the porch and as a border around the lattice. We’re going to try to get some of the lattice up this week. The handrails should also be ready for pick-up this week.  So, there’s still quite a bit left to do, but at least we can call phase 2 complete!

Here’s an updated to-do list.

  • Finish removing the floor boards
  • Enhance the floor support with additional joists and bracing
  • Install 4x4x4 posts in between our full length posts
  • Put up joist hangers
  • Re-do joists at the front of the house (make them perpendicular to the house)
  • Fix the front set of stairs so it doesn’t look like 2 houses
  • Dust management
  • Install new floor boards
  • Replace the hand rails (purchased, picking up THIS week)
  • Build new steps (about 40% complete)
  • Install new lattice
  • Fix the roof/ceiling with more support and add beadboard

It won’t be long before we’re calling this porch project complete! I’m looking forward to putting it to good use soon. I’m already researching new outdoor table and chairs… shhh… don’t tell Mike!

I hope you had a wonderful holiday weekend. Have a great week!
